We started by focusing on the meaning of the Olympic rings, and their colours. Children and teachers dressed in the colours of the rings each day of the first week of the games.
We then focused on our New Zealand athletes at the games and the different sports they participated in.
As medals were being won by our New Zealand athletes we kept a chart to show our progress at the games. As children came in with news of what sports they had seen on the television, teachers then adapted the sport into an activity to play at kindergarten.
Newspaper clippings were brought into the centre which we displayed on our walls. On a world map, we marked all the cities where the games have been held.
We also found where the next Olympic games are going to be held, Rio de Janero, Brazil. Some of the sports our children at kindergarten participated in were quoits, long jump, hurdles, shotput with bean bags, bowls, target throwing with painty cotton balls, rowing, weightlifting.
